This wine comes from a blend of barrels from our La Chenaie vineyard site in the EolaAmity Hills AVA, and from our ANA vineyard in the Dundee Hills. La Chenaie is a 104 acre site, planted starting in 2001, with ~3 acres of Tempranillo planted with 3 different Tempranillo clones - Valdepenas, Tempranillo Clone 1, and the ‘Duero’ (Clone 12). ANA has 2 acres of Tempranillo, Clone 6 & clone 11, the “Toro” clone.
The soils at both sites are volcanic, from the Jory series - Jory, Gelderman, and Ritner, with Ritner being the shallow more rocky soils where the hills crest, Gelderman just below, and Jory deeper and farther down the slopes. These sites are both farmed organic and biodynamic.
This wine offers an homage to Dr Richard Smart, the ‘Flying Vine Doctor’, whose climate research identified the Willamette Valley as an ideal place to grow Tempranillo.
